Learn the fundamentals first

Software is useful, but strong designers rely on composition, colour, typography, contrast, hierarchy, and visual balance. Study these principles before trying to learn every application.

Choose a focused toolset

Start with one or two tools that match your direction, such as vector design, image editing, layout, or interface design. Expand only when a real project requires it.

Practise through projects

  • Create social media posts for an imaginary brand.
  • Redesign a weak visual identity and explain your decisions.
  • Build a small campaign with consistent typography and colour.
  • Ask experienced designers for specific, constructive feedback.

Build a portfolio early

Client work is not the only valid portfolio material. Carefully planned personal projects can demonstrate thinking, craft, and presentation skills.

Keep learning

Review good work, document what you learn, and improve one skill at a time. Consistent practice is more valuable than waiting for the perfect beginning.
